RECONNECT -> Did you know?
The Education Act 1996 states it is compulsory for 5 -16 year olds to attend school?
The benefits of going to school are huge! Children are taught how to read, write and use math's skills, as well as having the opportunity to learn new talents. They are able to make friends and learn how to get on with people. Children who do not go to school sadly miss out on these opportunities.
Teachers were once pupils too!
There are many reasons why some children do not enjoy or attend school regularly, some of these are explained below.
- Not getting on with other children or bullying
- Having problems in a certain class
- Finding school work difficult
- Problems getting to and from school
- Fear or guilt of leaving home and family
- Fear of the school environment
- Children who are used as young carers or interpreters
- Children who are taken on extended leave can fall off school role
- Parents who can't find a school place for their child
Some children can have problems at school and may become 'School Refuser's'. This is where they remain at home, upset at the thought of attending school.
This can become a huge problem for some children, causing them to have headaches, panic attacks, shaking and sweating, problems sleeping, stomach aches and even diarrhoea at the thought of going to school. They do not 'truant' as they prefer to spend the day in the safety of their own home.
Some children do not make the transfer from year six to year seven and find themselves without a school place.
