RECONNECT -> What we do?

As a child sometimes it can feel like there is nobody in the world who understands you or that nobody cares that you are not in school or do not enjoy school, but we do. We work with children and young people on a one-to-one basis in home or school. We use lots of creative activities to help the children overcome their problems

Work we do with children:

- To find out why children and young people do not like school or why they are having problems with education.
- Find new ways for children and young people to cope in school.
- Working in schools to identify problems early on, and help prevent exclusions.
- Work with the child and their parents, providing a valuable link between the school and the home.

When children are having problems at school and may be at risk of being excluded, we take referrals from the school and can work either at the school or at the child's home to provide direct 1:1 consultation and intervention support. We aim to help children overcome any problems and to enjoy their experience of school.
We play games, make lots of things, we talk through these aiming to build the child's self-esteem and confidence and to help child to understand how to get the most of their school days.

It is important to also work with parents of children who are, or are at risk of becoming 'disconnected' from education.

Work we do with parents:

- To find out the views of families and carers and help them prevent their children from becoming disconnected.
- Provide support to parents and carers on how their children can re-enter education.

Transition assemblies

This term we are concentrating on the transitional period Year six pupils make into Year seven, and are conducting assemblies in primary schools for Year six pupils. This focuses upon issues children may have at this very important period of their school experience. We look at issues such as making new friends, different school environment, what it will be like in Secondary School and anything else they feel is important.

We aim to encourage children to think about moving schools, as this can be a very exciting time but also very scary time for children, especially if their friend's will be going to different schools.

When? March to July 2006
Where? In year six classes at schools

'Young People's Parliament'
Last February we held a day whereby children aged 9 - 13 who were, or were in danger of becoming disconnected from education, took on the role of Prime Minister for the day. The young people spent the day creating their own Education policies, what their ideal school would be like, how they could help other children having problems and any other aspects concerning education that was important to them. During the day they formed parties, and then elected a member to stand and debate with the other leaders. At the end of the day they voted on what policies best reflect them (and will realistically work!!) and voted for their Prime Minister! .

When? February 2005 half-term
Where? Small Heath Baptist Church

It was such a success that we would love to hold another this year !
